Since 2009, the Materials Division of HLB ENG has been a dedicated supplier of high-quality Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes in the shipbuilding and marine plant market, as well as the power and petrochemical plant market, both domestically and abroad. These pipes are used as a substitute for traditional steel pipes, promising longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs at a more affordable price. Recently, GRP pipes are predominantly used in SOx scrubbers and Ballast Lines, gaining attention in the new shipbuilding or Retrofit market.

GRP pipes can be manufactured with various physical and chemical characteristics by choosing an appropriate combination and quantity of materials and specific manufacturing processes. HLB ENG has been producing and supplying GRE pipes during pipeline dry-docking processes at large domestic shipyards for 14 years, designating major customers such as Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, and Hanjin Heavy Industries, with a track record of delivering 608 vessels.

Filament Winding

During the manufacturing of GRP pipes, filament winding equipment is used. The inner surface of the pipe is wound with resin-soaked glass fiber until the desired thickness is achieved. By adjusting the winding angle for overlap, the uniformity and high quality of the GRE/GRP pipes are ensured.

Hand Lay-up

The hand lay-up method, a common technique in GRP pipe production, involves applying a release agent to the mold and then layering materials like Surface Mat and Roving Cloth to achieve the required thickness and strength. This versatile method facilitates the production of pipes in a wide range of sizes and complex shapes.

Joining Methods

Various joining methods are used in GRP pipe production, including Bell and Spigot, Butt and Wrap, Flange Joint, and Double O-Ring Expansion Coupling Joint. Each of these methods offers distinct advantages such as fast installation, easy handling, high-pressure resistance, and effective relief of external stress.

These pipes offer a longer lifespan at a lower cost compared to conventional steel pipes, and also have lower maintenance costs. HLB ENG possesses various technologies, including filament winding, hand lay-up, joining methods, vacuum infusion, and pultrusion, ensuring the high quality and uniformity of the pipes. Vacuum infusion, in particular, is a technique used to produce products with higher strength and quality compared to hand lay-up, and is widely used in vehicle parts, boats, eco-friendly products, wing sail systems, and rotor sail systems.

Filament Winding

Hand Lay-up

The hand lay-up method, a common technique in GRP pipe production, involves applying a release agent to the mold and then layering materials like Surface Mat and Roving Cloth to achieve the required thickness and strength. This versatile method facilitates the production of pipes in a wide range of sizes and complex shapes.

1. Bell and Spigot

By applying adhesive to the processed joint ends, the joints are inserted, ensuring quick installation time and accuracy, while also providing high-pressure resistance.

2. Butt and Wrap

After grinding the surfaces of both ends to be joined, lamination is performed to create the joint. This method has excellent workability, making adjustments and modifications easy, and is suitable for use with control tubes.

3. Flange Joint

Flange joints are manufactured according to ANSI, JIS, and DIN standards, just like conventional steel pipe flanges, and can be connected to pipes made of different materials.

4. Double O-Ring Expansion Coupling Joint

The Double O-Ring Expansion Coupling Joint is necessary for stress relief and uses a Double O-Ring and Lock-Key connection method. This method is primarily used in Ballast Lines, which are significantly affected by Sagging/Hogging.

Vacuum Infusion

Vacuum infusion is a technique used to manufacture products requiring higher strength and quality compared to those produced with the hand lay-up method. This technology prevents the formation of bubbles and overuse of resin, and is widely used in various fields, including vehicle parts, boats, eco-friendly products, wing sail systems, and rotor sail systems.

Pultrusion Method

The pultrusion method is a process where a mixture of reinforcement material and resin is continuously pulled through a mold to create a structure with a consistent cross-sectional shape. This technology offers benefits such as higher fire resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength, and lightweight compared to cast iron or steel. It is primarily used in the production of civil engineering and construction materials, pipes, and structural beams.
